The dozen competitors, after a couple of slight breaks tuvay, were despatched ou very even terms. Agnostic, who held i> position on the right, was the first to show in front, and was followed by Prince Karl, St. Mary, and Barometer, with Hugo close up next, then coming in the centre, Gallinule, and Salisbury, withj Hugo, Spot, The Rector, and St. Crispin on the left. But little change in these relative positions occurred as they came down the hill. Agnostic, on entering the dip, being followed by St. Mary, Galliuule, and Salisbury, with Hugo, Spot, and St. Crispin the most prominent of the others. Before reaching the distance Prince Karl was beaten, and almost immediately Salisbury and Gallinule drew away, and an exciting race was won by the former by a head. The thirteen horses were weighed out in excellent time, and were marshalled at the post several minutes before the appointed time. Several breaks away, however, occurred before the start was effected, but at length the lot were despatched on fairly equal terras. Tho first to break the line was Whiteloek, who held a position in the centre of the pourse, who came on, followed by Bird of Freedom, Wine Sour, How's That, and Beaulieu, with Portnellan close

up on the right, and Corunna, Melton, dad Exmoor just in advance of MacMahon on the left» with Dalmeny whipping in. Before a quarter of a mile had been covered Bird of Freedom lost his place, when Wine Sour became the attendant of Whiteloek, with How's That, Cornnna, and Beaulieu well up, with Melton aud Exmoor holding prominent positions in the centre. In this order they descended into the dip, bub when fairly in the bottom Whiteloek was passed by Beaulieu ; but directly the ascent for home was. commenced Melton, who was close under the stand railings, began to creep up, and continued to improve his position with such steadiness that before the distance was reached Lord Hastings' colt was well in front of everything, and, drawing away at every stride, won in a common canter by three lengths ; two lengths separated second and third ; Coruuna was fourth, a length off.
